The estate’s prime location, down a dirt road on the southwestern edge of Montalcino, looks out towards the Tyrrhenian sea, and the elevated position ensures his vines grab that cooling breeze — allowing for fully mature Sangiovese grapes to make some ripe and powerful expressions of Brunello — and this 2019 Riserva leads the charge brilliantly. And that utterly cray-cray, UNDER $50 price?!

Heaven. Or Tuscany…pretty much the same thing. That potpourri of sandalwood, and dried violets and lilacs, with this rising tide of black cherries and roasted Mediterranean herbs bubbling just beneath the surface. A few swirls, and that fateful first sip later…and POW!!! Those black cherries come rushing in like a King Tide, bringing brooding, meaty, fresh-off-the-grill smokiness, and poured asphalt, with uplifting jolts of red plums, and dragonfruit, pine needles and peppermints, with the lingering esther of smoldering sage, and a cascade of wild juniper. It’s a BEAST — in the best imaginable way, so brooding, and pulsating with power, restrained like a caged predator, but the bars are starting to bend…and the beast is preparing to pounce! After 30 minutes in the glass, this intense monster really shows the exceptional promise of the vintage — and as Vinous put it so deftly — “admirable length”.
